How
With my trusty Surly Long Haul Disc Trucker. I did the west coast in 2008 on a non-disc Trucker. Unfortunately, the trucker frame buckled slightly in a low-speed header into a dirt embankment, so a new one was in order, this time with disc brakes (Avid BB7).I built up the new trucker with some components from the older one. The drivechain is quite wide: 44-34-22 in the front, and an 11-36 cassette in the rear. The latter is customized: I took an 11-tooth cog off the 11-34 cassette on the old trucker and replaced the 12-tooth cog on a new 12-36. This gives me a low end of 17.0" (quite low enough to go uphill at 3 mph, if necessary), and a high end at 111.4", for a range of 690%.
I have no generator hub this time; I've been at least somewhat disappointed with all the generators I've used. So this time I'm taking two large battery packs (10,000 mAh and 15,000 mAh), to charge my iPhone and iPad Mini. I'll also be taking an Amod AGL3080 to track my co-ords for later geo-tagging and a complete GPS track.
My tires are Marathon Plus 700x38's (comfortable! bombproof!), and I'll be pulling a Bob trailer.
